The terms for using PlateVIN: free to use, provided as is, and not a substitute for an inspection, a history report or the manufacturer’s own recall check.
Using the site
PlateVIN is free to use for personal and business lookups. Do not use the site in a way that disrupts it, or run automated bulk requests through it; NHTSA’s services are shared public resources with their own usage limits.
You decide what to rely on
The decode and the recall list are NHTSA’s data shown as it was returned. They can be incomplete, out of date or wrong for a particular vehicle. Before you buy, repair or drive a vehicle because of something shown here, confirm it with the manufacturer, a dealer or NHTSA. See the disclaimer for the specific limits.
No warranty
The tool, the data pages and the guides are provided as they are, without a warranty that they are complete, current or fit for a particular purpose. Data pages show the date of the NHTSA snapshot they were built from.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses that result from using PlateVIN, including a purchase made, a repair skipped or a recall missed. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
